Amdavadis may have not have the best of traffic sense but here is something that will help you learn about traffic safety. For, the Ahmedabad traffic department has started preparations for the road safety week to be held in January next year. Officials of the department told DNA that the programme will be held between January 1 and 7.

This is in accordance with the directives of the ministry of road, transport and highways. The ministry has placed suggestions before the concerned authorities for effective management of traffic, optimal use of public transport system and maintenance of road infrastructure.

Sources in the department said that a detailed plan is being worked out for activities that will be conducted as part of the programme.  Joint commissioner of police (traffic), Mohan Jha said, "We are still working on a plan for the programme and it will be ready soon." As a part of the road safety week, the traffic department will make an active effort to make roads safer and to manage the flow of traffic in the city, he said.

The week will also see the department conducting rallies and distributing pamphlets to citizens in a bid to create traffic awareness. Prior to the programme, the department will also conduct a training programme for AMTS drivers and drivers hired by private contractors.  DCP (traffic) MM Anarwala told DNA that the department will have a training programme for drivers in the last week of December.

DNA had earlier reported that the traffic department was mulling over the idea of training bus drivers as the number of accidents involving them had registered a rise. There are over 800 bus drivers in the city at present. Moreover, cases of accidents involving truck drivers are also on the rise.

"These drivers know the basics of driving a heavy vehicle but are not trained in traffic regulations because of which such accidents happen," Anarwala said. "They should be in a position to know road signs and traffic rules. Very often it  so happens that they are taught driving  by somebody who has no idea about  traffic rules."
