Ahmedabad student kills self after failure to get admission

Maulik Chauhan, a resident of Odhav committed suicide by hanging himself at his residence after he failed to make the cut for the Bachelor of Computer Application course.

After the board and its results, it is the anxiety and pressure about admissions that are taking a toll on students, forcing some to take extreme steps.

In one such case, a youth hanged himself to death after he failed to get admission in a college and course of his choice. Maulik Chauhan, a resident of Odhav committed suicide by hanging himself at his residence after he failed to make the cut for the Bachelor of Computer Application course.  Police said he used his mother's sari as a rope to end his life.

Police sources said that the incident happened in the afternoon on Friday. The victim's father was at his office and his mother was out shopping.

"He was disturbed since the last few days as many of his classmates had already made it to the merit list," a police source told DNA. The source said that he was worried after he failed to make it to the merit list of BCA colleges.

"He was a commerce student and aspired to do a graduation in computer application," investigating officer, Gunvantsinh Natwarsinh told DNA. Chauhan's father Dineshchadra works as a clerk in the forest department office in Meghaninagar.

His mother is a housewife. His elder brother is a photographer and has his own shop. "The family is well to do, but the boy was under pressure to get admission to a professional course," a source said.

The Odhav police has commenced investigation and will record the statements of the family members in the next few days.
