After the mysterious recovery of five stolen figurines of the 400-year-old chabutara under the Ellisbridge, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation is now considering of providing a permanent and secure location for the heritage monument.

On Thursday, an alert citizen living near Gujari Bazaar informed DNA that  5 out of 7 stolen figurines have been re-installed on to the chabutara by the thieves who stole them two weeks ago.

According to the deputy municipal commissioner Capt Dilip Mahajan, security of the chabutara will be on AMC's list of high priority, as it don't want to lose the figurines once again.

"This is certainly good news for all of us. I assure you that we will take all necessary action to preserve the heritage monument" said Mahajan, who also assured of taking the matter ahead and discussing it with the municipal commissioner.

A senior AMC official offered another solution for permanent security to the chaburtara. He said: "The option is to shift the whole monument to a museum like Sanskar Kendra. This is the safest way to preserve such heritage monuments. We have already shifted a statue from Victoria Garden and to Sanskar Kendra at Paldi. We will also propose to commissioner to take similar action for the chabutara," the senior official added.

AMC's heritage committee chairperson Bijal Patel, who too swung into action after the mysterious recovery, is also concerned about its security. "There is a high possibility that it can be stolen once again, so I will personally meet the higher authorities to provide a safe and secure place for the chabutara," said Patel.

The chabutara located near the Ramwadi area under the Ellisbridge came in to limelight after the reports of possible theft of 6 figurines published in DNA before two weeks. Since the theft and subsequent recovery have put the local residents in the dock for allegedly supporting the thieves, the issue of security will remain on top of priority list till the final decision on shifting is taken.
