The Ahmedabad Municipal Transport Service's ambitious project of linking its rickety buses with vehicle tracking system (VTS) seems to have been lost in the wilderness.

A year and Rs32 lakh later, the system is yet to take off after the relation between the Hyderabad-based company that was to implement it and the AMTS soured.

After spending manpower, energy money and time on the project the AMTS is back to square one. It has now floated a fresh tender to hunt for a suitable partner to help connects its 750 buses through the VTS.

Chairman of the AMTS committee, Pravin Patel said that the Hyderabad company could not fulfill their demand to implement
some specific changes in the system.

Authorities said that the AMTS bosses wanted that the different routes on the map be shown in different colours but the company could not provide it. So far the VTS has been installed in around 200 buses.Patel said that though these buses had VTS the results were zero. "There was some fault with the system due to which we could not see a bus with VTS when it changed its route. This is because the same coloured pointers were used to identify all the buses on the map," said Patel.

He further said that there were some problems with the kilometers being registered by the online VTS system. Patel, however, clarified that though the deal did not work out it did not result in any loss for the AMTS.

Each VTS machine cost the AMTS Rs13,000 but the machines have been installed in the buses.  "Now, to save the project from further delay we have decided to partner with some local company.

This will ensure that the system is quickly installed in rest of the buses," said Patel. The project to install VTS in all the 750 buses of the AMTS is worth Rs47.5 lakh and is part of the JNNURM projects. The officials believe that the move to install VTS system in the buses will help them keep a tab on private bus operators, who often delay the buses or fail to cover all the routes.

"Through VTS we can keep a check on the routes, speed and regularity of the buses and fine them if they are found flouting the rules," said the official.
