The Congress on Tuesday slammed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for issuing notices to slum-dwellers in Bapunagar. The opposition party in the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) also called the ruling BJP anti poor.

"The BJP has mocked the poor by issuing notices to remove their hutments just three days after the chief minister organised a 'Garib Mela' in Bapunagar," said Surendra Baxi, leader of opposition in the civic body.

Baxi said that on the one hand the state government was trying to claim credit for the schemes announced by the centre and on the other it was serving notices to more than 200 poor people of Bapunagar to clear their hutments.

He said that as per the rule, the hutments cannot be removed without providing alternate arrangements. In another development, a delegation of the schedule caste community in Gomtipur met Baxi.

The residents of Gomtipur said that they have been asked by the estate department of the AMC to clear the place where they have been living.

They also alleged that they were not served any notice.
"This shows the BJP's anti-poor attitude," said Iqbal Sheikh, corporator of Gomatipur.

He also said that the Congress has been complaining about overflowing drainage in the area for a long time, but no one has been paying heed to the complaint.

"This is why we had to create a ruckus in the master station and go to jail just to ensure that the poor are heard by the ruling party," he said.
