It seems that Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has finally woken up to the adverse health effects of radiation from mobile phone towers.

With so much talk on adverse effects of radiation, AMC wants to take cautious steps in this direction. The civic body has started receiving suggestions about the hazards of mobile towers in residential areas and near healthcare centres.
"We want to keep mobile towers away from maternity homes and urban health centres in the city," said an official of AMC health department.
He added that the policy in this regard would be formulated very soon and uniformly implemented in all six zones of the city.
Already, an inter-ministerial committee formed by the central government has made several recommendations to make cellphone towers safer.
They include strict restriction on installation of towers in densely populated areas, lowering the permitted radio frequency (RF) energy levels to just one-tenth of the current levels, reduction in permitted specific absorption rate (SAR), and setting up of a monitoring network.
Mobile towers will be relocated from the vicinity of maternity homes and urban health centres.
"We will allow them to shift the towers to a place in the area at a safe distance from maternity hospitals and health centres and they will not have to bear the additional financial burden," said the official.
The AMC estate department allows mobile tower companies to
set up towers in the city by charging Rs25,000 as installation fee, besides the rent.
