Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC)'s plan to supply water twice in a day during summer has failed. Due to insufficient water supply from the Narmada canal, the AMC stopped supplying water in evening from Sunday.

AMC officials said they were holding talks with the state government to improve water flow, so as to resume water distribution twice a day within the next few days.

Explaining the reason for water supply disruption in evening, a senior AMC official said that they required 950 mld (million litres daily) to 1000 mld water for supply in morning and evening, but currently they got around 650 mld to 700 mld water.

"There is scarcity in water supply from the canal. Currently, if we supply water in evening, we will not be in a position to do so in morning," said the officials. While officials claimed the problem would be resolved in a couple of days, sources said it would take a while to do so.

"If the civic body gets reduced water supply from the state government, chances are that morning water supply would also be disrupted," said a source close to the development. In summer, the AMC had been supplying water twice a day.

However, residents have been complaining that the civic body reduces time of water supply from an hour to around 45 minutes in morning when it starts evening water supply.
