The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) demolished around 400 huts located in the Sabarmati riverbed from Dudheshwar to Subhash Bridge on Wednesday.

However, residents registered their protest against the drive as majority of them have not got alternative residences. A non-government organisation (NGO) claimed that the AMC's move is a violation of a court order.

The estate management and town planning department of AMC's central zone and east zone demolished the shanties located in the riverbed around the newly-built Vadaj-Dudheshwar Bridge.

The huts fell within the jurisdiction of the Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation.

The residents registered their protest against the civic body's demolition drive as majority of them have not got alternative residences as per the policy.

"The civic body cannot demolish huts without providing alternative arrangement," said Bina Jadav, director of Housing Right Manch, Gujarat, an NGO.

Jadav claimed that the civic body did not issue any notices to the residents before demolishing their hutments.

"The AMC has even violated court's order. The Gujarat high court has formed a committee for rehabilitation of the project affected people and the committee has not taken any decision regarding demolition of these huts," claimed Jadav. She also said that their organisation will file contempt of court petition against the civic body.

The estate management and town planning department deployed more than 100 employees, with police protection, in the demolition drive. There are more than 1,500 huts to be removed and the operation will continue for more three-four days, an AMC official said.

The official added that there are some cases of dispute and some people have not got alternate arrangement.

"The demolition drive was carried out with a view to avoiding delay in the completion of the Sabarmati River Front Project," said the official.

People who are affected by the project and are legally entitled to get alternate houses as per the policy, will get their due, he further said.
