As the city's borders expand and population rise, the city police are realizing the need for a new police zone to meet with the rise in complaints at various police stations.

To keep pace with Ahmedabad's development as a mega city, the city police have come up with a proposal to form a new police zone -the seventh in the city.

According to sources, the new zone will be carved from zone-I that has nine police stations mainly in western parts of the city. This includes Satellite, Vastrapur and Sola police stations among others. In these areas, the city limits under Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has also increased significantly over the years.

Sources said that the areas falling under Sarkhej-Gandhinagar Highway and Sardar Patel Ring Road may be merged with the city police once the proposal gets a government nod.

It means the city police will take over areas falling under the Sarkhej police jurisdiction as well.

The city policing system is divided into two sectors with six zones across the city as of now. This system of policing is called commissionerate.
Under this arrangement a police commissioner is the top cop, while each sector has a joint commissioners of police each.

Further, the sectors have been divided into zones and divisions with a deputy joint commissioner of police in each zone and an assistant commissioner of police for every division.

According to sources, the formation of new zone means the Sarkhej police station that falls under Ahmedabad rural police will become a part of city police.
Sources said that in the new zone, police stations such as Satellite, Vastrapur and Sola may also be merged.
Confirming the development, sector-I joint police commissioner Satish Sharma told DNA that there are couple of reasons for the proposal. "The city area under AMC has increased significantly over the years with its limits touching the rural police jurisdiction. So, there is a need to increase the area under city police to maintain law and order situation accordingly. The proposal covers all the areas surrounding SG Highway and SP Ring road," Sharma said.
He further said that the other reason for the proposal is that zone-I alone with just nine police stations register 40% of the city's crime.
"While the rest of the 60% crimes are registered from other zones. This is another reason why there is a need to come up with a new zone," said Sharma. The new proposal also comes in wake of the fact that with commercial development of the city, the nature of crime is also changing. Police officials said that for the last two years, incidents like communal riots are almost non-existent. "But crimes in which properties are being targeted are on the rise," said officials.
