Here's some good news for all heart patients of Ahmedabad. VS Hospital is set to adopt a state-of-the-art equipment called Rotablator & IVUS which will bring down the cost of an angioplasty to Rs40,000.

This advanced technique is commonly used in countries like US and Japan. Now, VS Hospital will become India's first government hospital to have the equipment.

Ahmedabad-based cardiologist Dr Tejas Patel conducted 12 angioplasty operations using this technique at VS Hospital on Saturday.

The equipment is installed in the Cath-Lab of the hospital for demonstration purpose. "It is a combination of three different techniques of angioplasty, being used simultaneously, and is certainly a breakthrough in heart surgery operations," said Dr Patel.

The cost of the equipment will be around Rs1 crore and will be purchased and installed permanently within two months' time, he added.

Dr Patel also invited renowned Japanese cardiologist Dr Junko Honye to perform some operations. According to Dr Patel, the new technique will also bring down the cost of angioplasty.

All the 12 patients operated on Saturday were charged between Rs.30,000 and Rs.40,000 for the operation, which is 25-30% of what is being charged at majority of the private hospitals, said Dr Patel.

This new technique allows the use of all devices of coronary intervention and allows cardiologists to use the radial artery near the wrist as an entry point into the body, rather than an artery near the leg or groin.

By snaking narrow catheters and wires through the body's veins leading to the heart, a cardiologist is able to expand a balloon, place a stent and open the blocked artery without surgery.

Moreover, now the doctor can cut the blockage into pieces with the help of Rotablator, which can be injected through the same catheter.
