Care Institute of Medical Science (CIMS) Hospital in Ahmedabad has started 'CIMS-Kids' to reduce deaths of children under five years of age. The state's first-of-its-kind and India's 11th Multi-super speciality unit was inaugurated by Jaynarayan Vyas, minister of health and tourism of the state, on Sunday.

Equipped with the latest medical technology, CIMS-Kids has trained paramedics to give medical emergency care to children. A team of dedicated paediatrics, critical care specialists, neonatologists, paediatric cardiologists and cardiac surgical team will attend to patients at the unit. A special paediatric ambulance is also present.

After inauguration, the minister stressed on the state's efforts to bring down IMR. "In line with the millennium development goals fixed by various countries in the world, Gujarat also aims to bring down IMR from 43 now to around 30 by 2020. Centres like these will definitely help the state in achieving target," Vyas said.

Dr Milan Chag, a leading city cardiologist and managing director who is the brain behind CIMS, said, "IMR in Gujarat is among the highest in the country. The non-availability of care and late diagnosis of diseases in kids are some of the major reasons." Dr Kashyap Shah, paediatric cardiologist added, "CIMS has developed a multi-super speciality unit where 90% birth defects in kids can be corrected."

The CIMS Kids Foundation will also provide up to three beds out of the total 20 paediatric beds at the hospital at subsidised charge for poor kids.
