The streets will be lined with colourful tazias (paper and bamboo replica of the tomb of Hazrat Imam) today as Muslim men in the city take out a procession on Muharram.

A total of 93 colourful tazias will be taken out in various areas including Khanpur, Jamalpur, Shah alam and Shahpur.  Some men will mourn the Hazrat's death by hitting themselves with sharp metal tied to a chain to show the pain and sorrow that Hazrat went through.

"The Muharram processions are a delight to me because of the colourful Taziyas. I look forward to this day as I get to see a lot of colour on the streets" said Mohammad Iqbal Khan, 12.  A marvellously adorned white horse will also be part of the procession — it will symbolise the empty mount of Hazrat Imam Hussain after his martyrdom.

Muharram marks the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain, grandson of the Holy Prophet. The festival begins on the first day of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar and lasts for 10 days.  It is said that during this month, the soldiers of Yazid, a Muslim ruler, surrounded Hazrat Imam Hussain, his family and followers at a place called Karbala in Iraq. In the days that followed, they were denied food and water and many of them were even killed.

Since that day, Muharram is observed to commemorate Imam Hussain's sacrifice for the human race. 32 Akhadas, 74 bands, 17 mourning parties, 16 camel carts, and 14 trucks along with over 2500 small 'mannat taziyas' will be flagged off from Delhighar to Khanpur.
Municipal commissioner, IP Gautam, Rameshwardasji of the Jagannath temple along with the Jain samaj will be present at Delhighar to welcome the taziya procession into the city in the early hours of December 28.

During the first nine days, 'Majalis'-gatherings will be organised in the morning, where people talk about the incident that took place at 'Karbala'.  "We have put in place elaborate arrangements for the festival. It is a day of great significance for every Muslim as this event marks the anniversary of the 'Battle of Karbala' when Imam Hussain ibn Ali, grandson of Muhammad, the last prophet of Islam, was killed by the forces of the second Umayad caliph Yazid I" said JV Momin, general secretary, Taziya Committee Ahmedabad.
