In the wake of the 15-day water cut in Ahmedabad, the prospect of uninterrupted water supply comes as a boon to Amdavadis. Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is developing a comprehensive water supply system to provide round-the-clock water, 365 days a year to residents in Ahmedabad. The project will be implemented after results from the pilot project in Jodhpur ward of the city are obtained.
On Friday, AMC invited expression of interest (EOI) from all parties who are interested in the pilot project which will be implemented in all residential complexes in Jodhpur ward. According to Jatin Patel, chairman of water supply committee, the project will be completed in two months. "We are determined to provide round-the-clock water supply to all six wards of the city. This will happen after the pilot project in Jodhpur comes through," said Patel.
Apart from providing continuous water supply, the pilot project also includes installation of water meters in all households of Jodhpur. AMC's standing committee has already proposed Rs2 crore for pilot project and another Rs2 crore for water meter installations.
According to calculations by AMC's water supply committee, each person needs 140 litres of water per day. Assuming four people in a household, the water meters will be set accordingly at 560 litres (140L x 4 persons) per family. Extra consumption will be charged, said Patel.
By this new method, AMC plans to reduce total water consumption in city. At present, Ahmedabad consumes 1100 million litres of water per day (MLD). As the meters will be in place, citizens will avoid extra consumption of water as it will attract extra payments.
