Ahmedabad cops recover Maharashtra ATS chief’s stolen car

The sleuths of Ahmedabad crime branch have recovered the stolen car of Maharashtra ATS chief Rakesh Maria. They came to know of the stolen car while interrogating members of a gang specialising in vehicle theft.

Eight cars, most of them Sports Utility Vehicles, were recovered by the DCB on Friday. During interrogation, the DCB found that a Verna car stolen by the gang and sold in Ahmedabad belonged to a joint commissioner of police of Mumbai.

The car was stolen from Andheri and was sold in the city.
Addressing a press conference, joint commissioner of police, Mohan Jha said that three members of the gang along with their handlers in city were arrested by the police. The interstate gang was active in Pune, Haryana, Mumbai and Ahmedabad and was nabbed by the DCB from Jamalpur crossroads on the basis of a tip off.

The DCB had also nabbed two local dealers, who bought the stolen SUVs for a price as low as Rs70,000 to Rs1 lakh.
"The dealers would then sell the vehicles using duplicate registrations," Jha said.

The two local dealers nabbed by the DCB have been identified as Mayur Devani, a resident of Vejalpur and Shaktisinh Rana, a resident of Bhuj.

The police also nabbed Abid Pathan, 19, a resident of a slum near Lokhandwala in Andheri, Iftar Qureshi, 23, and Afsar Qureshi 28, both residents of Vadala in Mumbai.

During interrogation, police inspector, KK Patel found that the three used to first buy the stolen vehicles. "They bought the vehicles from thieves for as low as Rs10,000 and eventually sold it for Rs70,000 to Rs1 lakhs to agents in the city," Patel told DNA.

The DCB contacted the Mumbai police for details of other vehicles gone missing from the city. It has recovered eight cars from the gangs.

Four stolen trucks recovered by DCB
The DCB arrested three people with duplicate registration books of four trucks worth Rs40 lakh. The police nabbed the owner of a transport company and two others in this connection. Talking to DNA, police sub-inspector, JD Purohit said that the three stole trucks, made duplicate registration books and later sold the vehicles. The DCB had nabbed Surya Maniyar, owner of a transport company, Govind Vanzara an employee of Maniyar and Gurmukh Sinh, the vehicle thief. Gurmukh allegedly used to steal the trucks and get the duplicate registrations made.

He then sold it to Maniyar with the help of Vanzara.

With the arrest, the DCB expects to crack several other vehicle theft cases. Sources also said that Gurmukh used to steal trucks seized by finance companies and then tried to erase the chasis number of the vehicles.
