Ahmedabad cops arrested a Mumbai-based doctor in connection with an 11- year-old extortion case. The case involves two notorious gangs-Babbar Khalsa and Chota Rajan-whose members allegedly wanted to extort money from former Gujarat chief minister late Amarsinh Chaudhary and Ahmedabad-based eye surgeon Amit Shah.

Karanj police arrested the accused doctor identified as Piyush Mehta on Tuesday, and later handed him over to the Detection of Crime Branch (DCB). DCB is investigating the case now. Police inspector JJ Sarvaiya, said, "In 2000, members of Chota Rajan and Babbar Khalsa had planned to kidnap and extort money from former chief minister Amarsinh Chaudhary and Ahmedabad-based eye surgeon Amit Shah. However before anything could happen, police arrested 18 people of the Chota Rajan gang from Gujarat, Punjab and Maharashtra," he said.

Police claimed that Piyush Mehta was also one of the accused in this case. During interrogation, members of Chota Rajan gang revealed that Mehta wanted to extort Rs2 crore from Amit Shah, cops said. Since then the cops were on the lookout for Mehta.

Sources said Mehta had a legal dispute with Amit Shah and had come to Ahmedabad to sort out this disputed matter when the Karanj police arrested him.
