A head constable, Dhansukh Patel and Bhagwati Jain, a jeweller, with an aim to earn big bucks, pumped fake notes into the economy, in Surat.

For every Rs1,00,000 of fake currency that the duo managed to infiltrate into the market, the two were given Rs40,000. However, the duo couldn't carry on with their activities. It came to an end when the Anti Terrorist Squad (ATS) nabbed Dhansukh Patel and Bhagwati Jain from Surat. While Patel is a head constable with Udhna police station, Jain is the owner of DJ Jewellers in Ghod Dod Road.

Police said they came to know of the duo's involvement following interrogation of Vasudev Patel. Patel had a business of ball bearings in Vadodara and through one of his friends he had come in contact with Dhansukh and Bhagwati.

Sources said Vasudev had given Dhansukh Rs6,00,000 in fake currency which the latter in turn sold to somebody for Rs2.5 lakh. Vasudev also gave Rs22 lakh of fake currency to Bhagwati who used to further pump it to unsuspecting customers.

Kesarisinh Bhati, Superintendent of Police, ATS said they will also be interrogating Jayanti Pateliya who is in Vadodara jail in connection with the Ruby murder case. Pateliya is believed to be the brain behind the currency racket.

Officials of state Anti Terrorist Squad had busted a counterfeit currency racket and arrested four members and seized fake Indian currency notes of varying denominations totalling Rs26,000. One of the arrested was Vasudev Patel.
Later the ATS arrested another key link in the case, one Kishor alias Munna who had told them of Pateliya being the main man behind the racket.
