It seems the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation's (AMC) ambitious Bhadra Square project is ready to get past the drawing board phase. The project had been in the conception and planning stage for several years.

Now, after getting approval from the centre to start the project under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), the civic body is all set to reinstate the glory of Bhadra Fort.

Part of the plan also includes public plaza and pedestrian space from Bhadra Fort to Teen Darwaja in the Walled City.
The AMC with Archeological Survey of India (ASI) plans to bring back the splendour of Bhadra Fort built by founder of the city Ahmed Shah in 1411 AD during Maratha rule in Ahmedabad.

As part of the Restoration and Reuse of Bhadra Fort Precinct, the AMC has invited tenders to start work on the Rs74.39 crore project. The project is designed by the Centre for Environment Planning and Technology (CEPT) and Vastu Ship Foundation.
Once the work begins in early 2011, the project will ideally be completed, within 18 months. The two identified zones under the project include - the one between Sabarmati riverside and Bhadra Fort, and from Bhadra Fort to Manek Chowk.

The first stretch has undergone major changes with multi-storied office buildings while the second zone still has the traditional pattern of the old city. The area between Bhadra Fort and Teen Darwaza will be developed as a complete pedestrian zone with a specially designed walkway.

A source further said that various landscape and design elements like fountains, lighting, swanky street furniture, signage and public amenities will further beautify the Bhadra Plaza. The AMC's idea is to ensure that the area is used as a city-level public place by keeping it open round the clock.

"The plaza can also play host to music concerts, garba, and various socio-cultural activities with the grandly illuminated Bhadra Fort as a backdrop," said a source.

The source said that the idea is to restore the beauty of Bhadra Fort and also develop a city centre.

With the completion of this project, knowing more about Ahmedabad is going to be an easy and fun-filled affair for tourists. This is because Premabhai Hall will be developed as a City Centre which will be a platform to learn about Ahmedabad city, its glorious past, present and future plans.
