Ahmedabad civic body destroyed 37K kg unsafe food last year

Health officials raided, collected samples and fined defaulters in different areas of the city.

Amdavadis are great foodies and to ensure that citizens of the city have safe food at the street joints and eating outlets, the health flying squad of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is always on its toes. In 2011, the squad detected a total of 36,970 kgs of food unsafe for human consumption and destroyed it.

Health officials raided, collected samples and fined defaulters in different areas of the city.

During the first six months of 2011 (January to June), the officials collected a total of 23,985 kgs of unsafe food which was later destroyed. Maximum unsafe food was collected in May --- 15,000 kgs. Similarly, in the first six months of the year, 143 kgs of adulterated food was destroyed after collecting 1053 kgs of samples from different eating shops.

In the second half of the year (July to December), the officials collected a total of 12,985 kgs all of which was destroyed.
From food outlets selling adulterated food, the officials of the flying squad collected a whopping Rs eight lakh in fines during the year.

A health official of AMC told DNA, "We have prepared schedules to conduct rigorous checking at food joints of different areas. The campaign which was started by the health flying squad has produced good results."
