Even as final order by the Supreme Court on reservations for Muslims is pending, the centre seems to be keen on pushing the issue forward at least by starting to talk about it. The move seems to be taking shape in the wake of UP elections going by what law minister Salman Khurshid is saying.

According to Khurshid, the centre is contemplating reservations to Muslims by bringing some changes in the existing law. The minister also said reservations to Muslims would be given on the lines of what Andhra Pradesh had done earlier. “We will follow the Andhra Pradesh model closely,” he said.

Andhra Pradesh has been working on providing reservations for Muslims in educational institutions for some time now and it was a poll promise by former chief minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy during the run up to the elections in 2004.

Khurshid’s comments are being seen as an attempt to woo about 20 per cent Muslim population in Uttar Pradesh, where elections are scheduled to be held shortly.

According to Khurshid, the OBC Commission would conduct a survey to decide the percentage of reservation to be given to Muslims.
