After it added comfort and speed to your travel, western railways is now planning to go the extra yard to tickle your taste buds too — and serve you food as per your diet fetishes. In what might fall as manna on diabetics’and diet-conscious’ ears, railways plan to offer sugar-free food to Rajdhani, Shatabdi and Duronto train commuters.

However, the menu will, for the time being, be introduced in Rajdhani, Shatabdi and Duronoto trains only and efforts are on to make the healthy option affordable too.
Large-scale demand from passengers spurred railway’s to initiate sugar-free items on its menu. According to western railway officials, the feed-back forms distributed by Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), which caters food in trains, were filled with requests for healthier sugar-free food. Around 50% passengers travelling in A/C coaches asked for sugar-free food, they said.

Talking to DNA, chief PRO of western railways, Sharatchandra Yaan said, “As there was no arrangement in trains, passengers were unable to get sugar-free food. Looking at demand from people, we decided to provide sugar-free food to passengers ourselves. Currently it will only be in Rajdhani, Shatabdi and Duronto trains.”

Yaan further said that though official date to start such food service is yet to be finalized, western railways expects to start it in the next few days.

Menu will comprise boiled vegetables, boiled eggs, sugar-free juice, tea and coffee, low-spice diet (khichdi and steamed rice), dal-soup, corn-flakes, brown bread sandwiches and oats with milk. Western railway will also increase contents on menu, if passengers demand, officials said.
However, that’s not all.

Thanks to the massive demand, western railway authorities are also mulling on providing Jain food and Continental food on these trains — Rajdhani, Shatabdi and Duronto — along with sugar-free food.
“Jain food and continental food is also on our agenda and we are working on it. Once everything gets finalized, we will start providing Jain food and continental dishes on these trains,” Yaan added.
