Anna Hazare’s supporters in Ahmedabad visited the residence of the two members of parliament from the city and sought their support for Hazare’s demand for a Jan Lokpal. Both the MPs - Harin Pathak, MP from Ahmedabad (East) and Dr Kirit Solanki, MP from Ahmedabad (West) - readily extended their support to Anna’s movement as both belong to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Social activist Bharatsinh Zala said they had gone to the residence of the two MPs as Anna has asked his supporters all over the country to go to the homes of their local MPs and seek their support for his movement.

“We had gone to Harin Pathak’s house and staged a demonstration outside his home. Pathak came out and agreed to wear the ‘I am Anna’ cap. He also promised that he will support the Jan Lokpal Bill if it is tabled in the Lok Sabha,” Zala said. Pathak told Anna supporters that he backed the movement against corruption not only because he was a BJP MP, but also because he is personally felt the Bill was necessary,
Zala added.

Pathak told DNA that he had extended full support to Hazare’s movement against corruption and had given this in writing to the activists who had come to his home for his support. “I also appeal to the Union government to bring a strong Lokpal Bill that includes Anna’s suggestions. I will vote in favour of the bill if it is tabled in the Lok Sabha,” he said.

Solanki said that he too had signed the letter of support that the activists had brought to his house. “Supporters of Anna had come to my house and asked me to sign the letter, or resign. There was no question of my not signing the letter as our party is also supporting the movement. I told them that while they are agitating in the streets, we are fighting for the Jan Lokpal in the Lok Sabha.”

Sanjay Joshi, member of ‘India Against Corruption’ (IAC), had also gone to meet Dr Kirit Solanki. Joshi told DNA that there is only one person fasting with Anna in Ahmedabad. “And that is Chantrakant Barot who is fasting at the Town Hall in the city. We are constantly in touch with Arvind Kejriwal and we keep him informed about the activities in the city in support of Anna’s movement,” Solanki said.
