Around 30 women activists led by CPI's Annie Raja and Anhad's Shabnam Hashmi were today detained after they staged a demonstration outside Parliament House to protest against the government not bringing the Women's Reservation Bill in the Monsoon Session.

The activists assembled at Vijay Chowk at 12 noon and started shouting slogans against the government. They were immediately taken into detention, a senior police officer said.

The activists said they were protesting against the non-passage of the historic bill which provides 33% reservation for women in state Assemblies and Parliament.

"We were promised by the government that it will be introduced in Lok Sabha in this session. But the session is coming to an end today and the government has not kept its promise," Raja said.

The bill was passed in Rajya Sabha in March this year but ran into trouble due to objections from a section of political spectrum.

Though the bill has support from Congress, BJP and the Left parties, Samajwadi Party and RJD were opposed to the bill in the present form saying they want a quota-within-quota for minorities and OBCs.
