Madurai: The Tamil Nadu Farmers Association Federation has demanded that the state government accept the recommendation of Commission for Agricultural commodities Prices, just like they did on the Sixth Pay Commission
The demand was being made in lieu of the fact that the price being paid for a tonne of sugarcane was very less at a time when the cost had gone up, C Nallasamy, coordinator, Tamil Nadu Farmers' Associations' Federation told reporters here.
He said the government was offering them only Rs1,200 a tonne based on the price which once was 12 a kg. Since the cost had gone upto Rs36 a kg, mills should pay them Rs3,600 per tonne, he said.
He claimed that mills earn Rs14,000 from each tonne of sugarcane -- through manufacture of sugar, molasses and captive power generation. "We are not asking for a share from power generation or molasses, only a price proportionate to the sugar price."
Another 'injustice' to farmers was the power supply schedule. While factories in sheds in a protected environment got power supply during the day, farmers who worked in the open receive power only during night, he said.
