A small lapse, an abuse triggered a volley of gunfire in Ahmedabad

CISF jawan, Balwinder Singh Majbi who resorted to indiscriminate firing in Naroda injuring at least 7 people, was allegedly abused by his senior for reporting for duty 5 minutes late.

A little lapse in duty and a subsequent tiff with a superior officer were the alleged reasons behind the now-arrested CISF jawan Balwinder Singh Majbi's indiscriminate firing that injured seven people in Naroda on Tuesday night.

Meanwhile, the condition of a nurse who was injured in the incident was reported to be serious. 

Majbi, 39, a jawan of battallion 7, group E of Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) reported for duty at CISF point near the Old Police Line in Naroda with an un-loaded rifle during the day. He was also late by five minutes. He was scolded by RC Chaturvedi, his superior at the point, which was set up after 2002 riots, for the lapse, a complained, lodged by Naroda police inspector (PI) CB Patel stated.

However, Chaturvedi went to Majbi's quarter in the Lane later in the night and abused him again for the same reason.
This provoked the paramilitary jawan and he fired five to six rounds from his INSAS (Indian Small Arms System) rifle at Chaturvedi.

But the shots missed their target as Chaturvedi ran for his life, Patel further said.

An incited Majbi then fired indiscriminately in the air and at people around.

Patel and his support staff rushed to the spot after receiving a message from the city police control-room about firing in Naroda Bhagol area.

The team tried to control an agitated Majbi, who was firing from the balcony of his official first-floor quarter, but failed. Following this, joint commissioner of police (JCP), sector-II, Atul Karwal; zone-IV deputy commissioner of police (DCP) Amit Vishwakarma and a Quick Response Team (QRT) reached the spot.

In the end, police took help of another CISF jawan who eventually persuaded Majbi to stop firing. Police later detained, and subsequently arrested Majbi. The drama went on from 10:45pm to 11:35pm. However, by this time, the jawan had fired 35 rounds and injured seven people, including two children and one police constables.

The police inspector said that Mukesh Bhimaji, 25 a constable of Naroda police sustained injuries in the incident.  Moreover, one-year-old Ayushi and her mother Ekta Vyas, 30, a resident of Durganagar, Naroda, were also injured in the firing. They have been shifted to Apollo Hospital near Indira Bridge from the Rudraksh Hospital where they were admitted on Tuesday night.
The condition of Urvashi Darji, 21, who is a nurse at AMC-run Shardaben Hospital in Saraspur and who also suffered bullet-injuries in her neck, was reported serious. She has been shifted to Shardaben Hospital from Rudraksh Hospital, Patel added. 
Another injured person was identified as Hitendrasinh Vaghela, 18, a resident of Avadhkunj society, Naroda and Dhiru Bharwad, 40.

Police said that Majbi also targeted a private Indica car and an AMTS bus and smashed their glasses, causing damage to the tunes of Rs15,000.

Naroda police have registered a case of attempt to murder against Majbi and started further investigation.
