It seems that the planning of Metro Rail has also undergone a change. Now, the Metro Rail may not be underground. The AMC will carry out a feasibility study for an elevated corridor from Electricity House to Kalupur Railway Station on Relief Road.
The AMC standing committee has allotted Rs15 lakh for carrying out the feasibility study. Earlier, the metro route on Relief Road was planned as underground project. This stretch is planned in first phase of Metro Rail Project between Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar.
The first phase of the metro rail project will cover a distance of 32.65 km from Vasna APMC in Ahmedabad to Akshardham in Gandhinagar and 10.90 km east-west corridor between Kalupur and Thaltej in Ahmedabad. In the second phase, the metro rail will connect Ahmedabad and Dholera special investment region (SIR). It is apprehended that the project may hit road blocks because of heritage sites on the route as it had happened in case of the BRTS route.
The route seems to be important taking into consideration commercial viability of the project. Relief Road connects many important markets of the Walled City and it is always congested. "The metro may give relief to the traders and buyers who use two-wheelers togo to various areas of Walled City on daily basis. As a result, there will be less congestion on Relief Road and the surrounding areas," said Bhupendra Patel, chairman of AMC standing committee.
He also said that if the Metro Rail does not become feasible, the elevated corridor can be used for other modes of transports as well.
