A case of Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority's missing drainage line

Thousands of Science City and Thaltej residents every year face drainage overflow and waterlogging problems. The reason for the same has now come to the fore.

For the Auda had left the drainage line in the area incomplete for nearly eight years for some unknown reason. Auda officials, meanwhile, have no answer as to why the line was not completed.
The authorities it seem forgot to put in place the drainage pipeline in some 25-30 meter stretch near Ugati Lake View on Science City Road.

This fact came to light when the engineering department of AMC's new west zone began digging work to set up a manhole near the site some days ago.

Amarsinh Chavda, resident of Heritage Homes in Thaltej, said that they have complained to Auda and AMC about the drainage overflow and water logging problems but to no avail. He also said that this has created a health hazard for residents.

It was only when the AMC decided to create a manhole near the site that it came to know of the missing line. "When we started the digging work we realised about the missing stretch. They had blocked the line where it was incomplete," said Jignesh Shah, assistant city engineer of AMC's Gota ward.

He said he did not know about the missing line as it was laid down by Auda. Sources in Auda said that similar incidents have also been noticed in the eastern part of the city. Some times the contractors leave the work incomplete wherever he finishes the length assigned to him under the contract, said sources.

BR Doshi, executive engineer of Auda said that the work was completed in 2002-03 so it is difficult to recall as to why it was left incomplete.
