'75 lakh in Gujarat suffer from obesity'

Rajkot: Stressing the need to avoid heavy consumption of ghee and oil in food is becoming a major threat to Gujaratis suffering from Obesity which is now a leading preventable cause of death worldwide, said obesity surgeon at NM Virani Wokhardt Hospital Dr Apurva Vyas. About 75 lakh people in the state are suffering from obesity.

People across the world are facing the problem of obesity which is increasing becoming a threat in developed and developing countries duo to their liking of eating junk food and life style, Dr Apurva Vyas said while launching obesity clinic at NM Virani Wokhardt hospital here on Wednesday.

He said, in India over nine crore people are suffering from obesity while in Gujarat at least 75 lakh people are suffering from obestiy.
Dr Vyas, who recently completed his bariatric surgery training in USA, said people in Gujarat are overweight becase the state is high on consumption of oil and ghee.

A patient can reduce about 30 to 35 kg weight in three months after undergoing an obesity surgery, but the patient would need to take calcium supplements for long, as one faces heavy calcium deficiency after the surgery.

The hospital's bariatric physicians Kamal Parikh, Kirit Kubawat, centre head of Deepak Venugopal were among those present at the inauguration of obesity clinic at the hospital.
