65 days on, Manipur’s woes compounded

Even as the economic blockade of National Highways 39 and 53 in Manipur entered the 65th day, a local committee has called for a 120-hour bandh in Jiribam sub-division of Imphal East district from October 8 demanding that Jiribam be made a full-fledged revenue district.
Jiribam District Demand Committee in a statement on Tuesday said the bandh would cover the entire Jiribam sub-division from 6 pm of October 8. Jiribam sub-division, is about 222 km west of Imphal.
The Sadar Hills District Demand Committee demanding that Sadar Hills area in Senapati district be made a full-fledged revenue had launched economic blockade of NH 39 (Imphal-Dimapur-Guwahati) and NH 53 (Imphal-Jiribam-Silchar) on August 1, which entered the 65th day.
The United Naga Council opposing the SHDDC demand had also launched economic blockade on the same national highways on August 21.
Official reports said prices of all essential commodities have gone due to economic blockades with petrol being sold at Rs130 per litre and diesel Rs60 per litre in black markets.
LPG cylinder costs about Rs 1500 per cylinder in black market, reports from markets said adding that even despite price hikes, these items are not available because transporters have stopped bringing it.
