Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has come one step closer to introducing around 610 new buses on city roads. It should be noted that the AMC had proposed these new buses in the budget of 2011-12.

Once these new buses are included, the total number of AMTS buses will reach up to 1200. At present, almost 650 AMTS buses are operating in the city, including 180 privately owned buses.

These buses are taken on hire basis from private operators. According to AMTS chairman Amit Shah, all the new buses will be hired from private operators.

On Monday, Shah held a meeting with AMTS transport manager MS Patel, municipal commissioner IP Gautam and standing committee chairman Bhupendra Patel to initiate and finalise the process.

According to Shah, AMTS will only appoint the conductor for each bus while the rest of the responsibility will be with the operator.
He also added that Global Positioning System (GPS) will be a must for every bus.

"We have decided to hire only those buses which have GPS system installed in them" said Shah. Through GPS enabled buses, the AMTS wishes to regulate the operations of the rented buses.

Through the GPS system, AMTS will track the time taken by each bus to cover its route, as well as check the stops they make.

"Through this system, we can monitor if a bus has made its regular stop or not. Drivers will not be allowed to make stops as per their wish" said Shah.

To monitor the buses, AMTS will set up a GPS control room in its head quarters. The move comes after the transport body received several complaints about drivers not stopping at designated spots. To curb the menace of drivers who don't stop at designated stops, AMTS will also penalise operator for the same.

According Shah, GPS system will automatically let them know the stops made by buses. "The operators will charge Rs25 for each missed stop. Even if the bus is full, the driver must stop at each signal," said Shah.

Apart from these regular buses, commissioner IP Gautam also announced that 20 air conditioned buses will be added in the near future.

AMC is planning to run almost 50 mini buses on the circular route covering surrounding areas of Gandhi road in the near future. These new inclusions and stringent regulations may reduce the problems faced by daily commuters of the city.
