A Delhi court has sentenced six persons including two women to upto three years of varying jail terms upto three years for forcing girls into prostitution, lamenting that even members of the fair sex are indulging in human trafficking.

"Trafficking for sexual exploitation is, in fact, derogatory to the dignity of a woman but it is an unfortunate fact that in many instances, females have been found to be traffickers," Additional Sessions Judge (ASJ) Dinesh Kumar Sharma said, adding  it's a serious offence.

The court sentenced three men - Narayan Bhol, Bacchu Rao, Sanjay Mandal - and two women - Sudha and Simran to -three years in jail while sentencing sixth convict to two years in jail.

Involved in human trafficking, all six convicts, belonging to Delhi and other places in the National Capital Region (NCR), were caught supplying girls for the purpose of prostitution.

Convicting them under section 5 of the Immoral Trafficking (Prevention) Act for "procuring, inducing or taking person for the sake of prostitution", the court also also imposed a fine Rs 1,000 on each of the convicts.

On a tip off by a civil society group, a Delhi police team, posing as customers, had carried out a raid and arrested the six, while also rescuing seven girls including four minors from their clutches.

The convicts had brought the seven girls to MB Restro Bar at Defence Colony here for a deal.

The rescued girls said they were told by the convicts that they are taking them to a birthday party. They said that they realised that have been taken there for prostitution only when they saw their handlers negotiating their rates, ranging from Rs 50,000 to 1.3 lakh, with the decoy customers.

The prosecution said the convicts had also told the police team that the girls would be supplied only during night hours from 9pm to 5am.

The judge noted with concern that innocent girls and children are being trafficked by mischievous people in order to make fast money.

"The curse of illegal human trafficking is on rise. It is a big social problem and all the countries of the world are affected by it. This problem is multiplied in  countries, where there is rampant poverty and illiteracy," the ASJ said.

The court also said sometimes even the traffickers fall prey and are forced to chose this path.

"I consider that at many a times, even the traffickers fall into this trade on account of some compulsions, ill-guidance or wrong company. The court has to keep a balance view while awarding the sentence. The purpose of sentence is not only punitive. It has also to take into account the reformative aspect also," the court said.

Prosecution had examined 18 witnesses to prove its case.

Pleading for leniency, counsel for convicts said they are of young age, first-time offenders and are behind bars for last three years.
