In the month of June alone, 25 cases of cholera were registered in various hospitals of the city, taking the total number of cases to 45 since January. Looking at the alarming rise in various water and vector-borne diseases, Congress has blamed the ruling party BJP for its failures in health-care system, particularly in controlling diseases in city.

It should be noted that in 2011, 57 cases of cholera were reported in the entire year, whereas 45 cases have already been recorded in six months of the new year. Also, the officials of AMC’s health department believe that the numbers will rise further. They say that the situation, though not alarming now, as the cases of cholera are coming from scattered vicinities and not from any concentrated areas, yet the civic body is taking adequate precautions so that things don’t get out of hand, said IK Patel, deputy municipal commissioner of AMC’s health department.

On the other hand, Congress has lambasted civic administration for not paying heed to the people’s complaints regarding overflow of drains and contaminated water. The figures of various diseases, revealed by the AMC’s health department include only indoor patients in various hospitals and not the outdoor patients who are being treated in hospitals and urban health centres, they allege. “The true picture will be revealed only when the figures of OPD patients are received,” claimed Badruddin Shaikh, leader of opposition, AMC.
