At least 42 people including 10 women and eight children are missing in mid-sea off the Orissa coast and their boat remained untraced since yesterday due to a low pressure area in the Bay of Bengal.

"We have requisitioned a helicopter to trace the missing people in the sea," Bhadrak district collector KC Patra told PTI over phone.

Rescue teams of the Indian navy, coast guard and marine police could not venture into the sea because of the rough weather condition.

Noting that a search operation had been launched to trace the missing boat, SP JN Pankaj said that they were hopeful of locating the missing people soon.

Altogether 45 residents of Nuagaon village under Basudevpur police station area in Bhadrak district had left in a mechanised boat for a nearby Shiva temple at Aradi yesterday.

On the return journey to the Chudamani jetty, three of the villagers remained behind at another temple near Dhamra in the sea.

There was no trace of the boat carrying the 42 others after it left Dhamra area, said Basudevpur police station in-charge Jadunath Jena.

The mechanised boat was last seen by local fishermen on yesterday evening, Jena said and might have taken shelter in one of many islands near Dhamra area.

The Bhadrak district collector, the SP and senior officials of the district administration were camping at Dhamra.
