Nearly a hundred CBI officers have faced departmental action in the past five years and at least 37 officers, including one of deputy inspector general (DIG) rank, are facing inquiries, an RTI plea filed by Haryana-based activist Ramesh Verma has revealed.
Verma had sought details of action against corrupt CBI officers.

The agency claimed 97 officers were punished after departmental inquiries between 2006 and May 2010. Of these, two each were of superintendent of police (SP) and additional superintendent of police (ASP) ranks, 10 of deputy superintendent of police (DSP) rank and 21 inspectors. Most, 32, officers were punished in 2008.
CBI, however, refused to give details of the nature of punishment given to these officers, saying revealing such information would affect its routine work.

According to the agency, as on May 31, 2010, departmental inquiries were on against 37 officers. An officer of the rank of DIG, 2 SPs, 2 ASPs, six DSPs and nine inspectors are among those facing probes.

The RTI query also revealed that as many as 294 complaints were received by CBI against its own men between 2006 and April 2010. The number of complaints received was 66 in 2006, 53 in 2007 and 50 in 2008. But 2009 saw a sudden jump in the number of complaints to 94. By April 2010, the number of complaints had already reached 31.
