The Maharashtra Knowledge Corporation Ltd (MKCL) on Sunday felicitated 35 top scorers from its ‘Nurturing Excellence and Talent’ (NET) programme, which aims at preparing students for international exams and motivating them to carry out
research.

The highlight of NET 2009-10 was the increasing number of participants from Marathi medium schools. Earlier, this number used to be limited.

NET includes various activities, experiments, lectures on biology, physics and chemistry, besides visits to the Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISER) and the National Chemical Laboratory (NCL).

Over 9,000 students from 14 districts participated in the programme this year. Thirty-five top scorers were felicitated. Five of these students were awarded gold medals, while seven were presented with silver and bronze medals on Sunday. Others were given certificates.

The 35 students hail from districts like Ahmednagar, Beed, Dhule, Jalgaon, Latur, Solapur, Gondia, Amravati, Gadchiroli, Yavatmal and Wardha.

NET consists of three exams for students of standards VII-X. The quality and difficulty level are as good as international standards. These exams are held online and on-demand mode.
NET coordinator Yashodhan Kale said that since MKCL started distributing the study material and DVDs in Marathi and held lectures in Marathi, the number of participants from Marathi schools had gone up.

“We are happy that more students from the Marathi medium are participating. These students are talented but most of the time they lag behind just because they are not from English medium schools,” said Kale.

He also noted that the number of girls had also increased. Thirty-five per cent of the participants this year were girls.
Vice chancellor of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University, Aurangabad, VM Pandharipande, said that the present day challenge was to find simple solutions to complicated problems, and stressed on the need to improve the communication between teachers and students.

Former vice chancellor of the University of Pune (UoP) and director of MKCL, Ram Takwale, stressed on projects to encourage novel ideas and innovation among students.
