When it comes to splurging, no one beats a paaku Amdavadi; because even in these tough times of global slowdown, rate hikes and spiralling fuel prices, he continues to buy automobiles, and how!

Thursday, on the auspicious day of Dussehra, automobile dealers will deliver around 1,000 cars and close to 3,000 two-wheelers in Ahmedabad.

According to Paras Somani, executive director, Landmark group, sentiments continue to ride high from last year and there is no hint of an economic downturn on the automobile market. He has 18 deliveries of Mercedes cars lined up for Thursday, up from 13 last year.

Volkswagen (VW) has grown 32.33% year-on-year (Y-o-Y). Polo leads the sales for VW accounting for 55-60% of the 95 deliveries. Honda Siel is expected to deliver 45-50 cars.  “Sentiments continue to be high and 25-30% growth (Y-o-Y) is expected. Meltdown is a global phenomenon. Also, there has been a marked increase in number of people opting for luxury cars,” said Somani.
Echoing similar opinions, Sukhbir Bagga, director - Group Planet Petal, said that demands are strong, but the boom of last year is missing this festive season. Sales are robust but are product-specific. According to him, almost 1,000 cars and 3,000 two-wheelers will be delivered on Dussehra day.

For Nissan, Sunny leads the show with a two-month waiting period while 63 Micras will see new owners today. Hyundai will be making over 180 deliveries, with Verna accounting for 30 of them.
“New cars like the Nissan Sunny and Hyundai Verna are doing really well. Yamaha has doubled Y-o-Y. There has been 10% growth over last year,” said Bagga.

Makers of the popular Activa scooter, Honda Motorcycles and Scooters India (HMSI) will deliver 1,000-1,200 vehicles, 75% of which are scooters.

“Two-wheelers will see 15% growth this year. With the coming up of HMSI’s new manufacturing facility in Rajasthan, we have been able to trim our long waiting periods,” said Jayesh Mehta, managing partner, Universal Honda.

Manan Autolink, which deals in Bajaj Auto and Maruti Suzuki, is ready to deliver 1,000 two-wheelers and 125 cars. "Compared to last Dussehra, we are seeing 50% rise in Bajaj's two-wheeler sales and 20% rise in Maruti cars," said Anil Patel, CMD of Manan Autolink. Non-availability of Swift Diesel has disappointed many. "Many customers are upset with no deliveries of the car on Dussehra day," he added.

In luxury car segment, BMW will deliver a whopping 20 cars Thursday. Last Dussehra, they delivered only 11 units. "Deliveries have gone up this year but it still looks like that the hike in lending rates and rise in petrol prices have hurt the sentiments. We had expected higher numbers but bookings are below par," said CEO and MD of Parsoli Motors, Talah Sareshwala.
