The Atul Chordia-Sharad Pawar connection dates back to Pawar’s college days when he was studying at Pune’s Brihan Maharashtra College of Commerce (BMCC) and was a classmate of Chordia’s father Ishwardas Chorida and trader Vithhalshet Muniyar, now a member of Pawar’s inner circle.

Chorida hails from a family of sugar traders from Bhawani Peth. The Chordia family’s entry into the real estate market took place in 1990s and its rise has since been meteoric. The Panchshil Realty group is now one of Pune’s real estate giants and has many prestigious projects to its name.

Chordia has acknowledged that Pawar’s daughter Supriya Sule, a Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) member of Parliament from Baramati, and her husband have shares in Panchshil Realty’s Tech Park One. He pointed out that Sule’s investments in the real estate project are in the public domain, as she had declared the same in her election declarations before the Lok Sabha elections.

In the case of Shahid Balwa, while tainted public relations handler Nira Radia has alleged close relations between Union agriculture minister Sharad Pawar and the jailed ex-managing director of DB Realty Shahid Balwa, a similar allegation was made by Maharashtra’s leader of the opposition Eknath Khadse on the floor of the state legislative assembly recently.

Khadse had claimed that Pawar was one of the eight passengers on a plane belonging to Shahid Balwa’s Eon Aviation to Dubai on February 8, 2010. He had claimed that along with Pawar and Balwa, the other passengers were Board of Control for Cricket in India chief Shashank Manohar, former International Cricket Council president Haroon Lorgat, and Vinod Goenka of DB Realty. Khadse had claimed that Pawar had used Eon’s plane on an earlier occasion too.

Khadse had also alleged a nexus between Balwa and Pawar with regards to the development of property on Survey No. 191 (A), Yerawada.

Meanwhile, in a press statement, Radia’s Vaishnavi Corporate Communications said: “The statements that are being circulated in public are matters of ongoing trials. These matters are sub-judice before the honourable court. In order to uphold the dignity of the court, we refrain from making any comments or responding at this stage.”
