Dressed in a light green kameez and cream-coloured churidar, DMK chief M Karunanidhi’s daughter Kanimozhi was the cynosure of the court proceedings in the 2G scam trial on Friday.

Inside the courtroom, she maintained a smile on her face, looking calm and confident.

She appeared along with Kalaignar TV managing director Sharad Kumar, another accused in the case, who were both summoned to appear on Friday.

The 43-year-old DMK leader was following the court proceedings attentively, and was seen talking to Sharad Kumar and her lawyers.

She told her lawyer Ram Jethmalani as he concluded his arguments on the bail plea, “Though you are not audible sir, it was a pleasure listening to you. Thank you so much.”

Kanimozhi, accompanied by her husband Aravindan and 11 party MPs including parliamentary party leader T R Baalu, had been sending text messages to her well-wishers during the proceedings. In one SMS she wrote, “God is with us. Things will be fine.”

She also spoke to her step-mother Dayalu Ammal on the phone during the lunch break, informing her she was fine and that the court proceedings would take some more time.

Former telecom minister A Raja, the main accused in the 2G scam, was also present in the courtroom along with other corporate honchos who are in custody. Jethmalani recorded a caveat, saying his arguments for Kanimozhi were being made without prejudice to the other accused, including Raja.

After the lunch break, Raja asked Kanimozhi to come and sit along with him. She denied a few times, but then sat with him hesitatingly amidst the media presence and chatted with him for 10 minutes before getting back to her seat on the opposite side.
Sharad Kumar also chatted over half-an-hour with Raja.

Kanimozhi also consoled Sharad’s wife, who was looking nervous during the proceedings, and talked to her about general things. Kanimozhi complemented her sandals and said they were comfortable after trying them on.

Kumar’s wife replied she had bought them from Singapore and will bring one more pair on her next trip.

The corporate honchos, who did not appear to be as comfortable as Kanimozhi, complained to the court about the scorching heat.
