The JPC on Tuesday decided to call all former telecom ministers since 1998, including A Raja and Dayanidhi Maran, who are facing allegations in connection with the 2G spectrum scam, to depose before it.

Contrary to rumours rife in the media — especially news channels — there was no reference to Maran in Tuesday’s meeting. It was reported that DMK’s TR Baalu had objected to the CBI director referring to the Union textiles minister in the meeting.

It is learnt that CBI director AP Singh made a power-point presentation to the JPC about the state of investigation into the spectrum allocation scam. Singh had traced the decisions taken at different stages when Arun Shourie and then Maran were Union telecommunication ministers.

One of the versions was, Baalu told the CBI director not to take the name of any person whose name was not there in the charge sheet.

Apparently, Singh had mentioned Arun Shourie as the minister of the period referred to in the investigation. However, another source said Baalu did not speak at all during the course of the CBI director’s presentation. The next meeting of the JPC will be held on June 29. The committee is still at the preliminary stage of being apprised of the issues. After the CBI, it will be the turn of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) to tell the committee about the parameters and processes of the issue.

It will be only after gathering the required information that the JPC will go into the second stage of summoning all those involved in the decision-making to question and to understand whether the 2G spectrum issue was handled appropriately or not, and what went wrong, and when and who could possibly be responsible.
