Non-vegetarian people who do not eat beef, here’s a word of caution from activists before you hit city hotels and restaurants to savour the delicacies!

According to several activists most non-vegetarian dishes, especially those prepared with mutton, are actually made of beef. Not only this, according to a rough estimate, there are more than 230 mutton shops in the city which supply beef to many city hotels and restaurants.

Bachu Rambhya, an activist against cow slaughtering, claims that cows are being slaughtered illegally in these shops, which are also not licensed.

“There are roughly 30 shops in the city which have the license to supply meat, but more than 230 illegal shops are engaged in the illegal slaughtering,” claims Rambhya who is also president of city-based Geetaben Rambhya Trust, Manek Chowk. The trust has been formed to fight the cruelty against animals and also runs a helpline. “People can call us on 22141197 or 22149550 for any issues related to cruelty to animal,” said Rambhya.

According to the activist, cow slaughtering and sale of beef is prohibited in Gujarat since 2002 after a seven-judge bench of the Supreme Court gave the verdict to this effect. However, he claims that illegal trade of beef has not stopped in the state. “Beef is labelled as other meat items like mutton and is sold in the open market by these shop-owners. If the law is enforced properly, no such shop would be able to do this,” Rambhya said.

He alleged that the authorities are turning a blind eye to the illegal trade.

The word ‘meat’ refers to flesh of buffalo, goat and sheep, and does not include cow, calves or bullocks. According to Dr SP Kulkarni, municipal health officer, doctor’s certificate is a must before slaughtering ‘meat’ animals. However, slaughtering of cows is strictly prohibited. But the official also admits that illegal shops are operating in the city. “There are illegal shops in the city. We have regularly raided them and taken actions against them in the past as well” said Kulkarni.
