2,250 crores for 8 lakh Gujarat govt employees on Diwali

With an eye on the polls next year, Modi government announced an early Diwali bonanza of Rs2,250 crore for eight lakh government employees and pensioners on Thursday.

The long pending announcement of disbursing the arrears arising from the implementation of the sixth pay commission recommendations coincided with Narendra Modi completing a decade as Gujarat chief minister.

The government also announced hike in salaries of fixed salary employees. The state government announced that the third and final installment of pending arrears, arising from the implementation of Sixth Pay Panel's recommendations, would be paid to 4.53 lakh state government employees and 3.47 lakh pensioners in cash.

It was earlier announced that the money would be put in GPF, but it would now be paid in cash. The government said that it would pay Rs1,082 crore in cash as arrears to employees and Rs295 crore to pensioners, totaling Rs1,377 crore.

The government also announced that 7% Dearness Allowance (DA), declared by the Centre recently, would be paid to state government employees and pensioners with effect from July 2011.

State government employees presently get 51% DA, which has gone up by 7%. This would result in additional outgo of Rs637 crore for employees and Rs216 crore for pensioners.

"In the last ten years, Team Gujarat has worked diligently for strengthening the state's economy and financial management. Their efforts are showing in the development of the state. The state government remains committed to their well-being," Chief Minister Narendra Modi was quoted as saying in an official statement.

The CM exuded confidence that the government employees would continue to work in a dedicated manner to turn the dreams of six crore Gujaratis into reality.

In another decision, the state government also hiked wages of more than one lakh employees drawing fixed salary. The monthly salary of saathi sahayaks and van rakshak sahayaks has been revised from Rs3,500 to Rs4,500, while that of vidya sahayaks, police lok rakshaks and revenue talatis has been hiked from Rs4,500 to Rs5,300.

The salaries of shikshan sahayaks of secondary schools has been increased from Rs5,000 to Rs9,400. Similarly, salaries of shikshan sahayaks of higher secondary schools and unarmed police sub inspectors have been revised from Rs6,000 to Rs10,000.
