22,000 cusecs of water discharged from Ukai dam

Sources said that 85,000 cusecs of water was released from Hathnoor dam on Sunday. Water level at Hathnoor is recorded at 212.15 metres, while danger level is 214 metres.

While there were good rains in Surat and South Gujarat region on Sunday, water level at Ukai dam remained at 334.43 feet and to maintain the level, 22,000 cusecs of water was discharged from the dam. 800 cusecs of water was discharged into irrigation canal as well. Sources said that 85,000 cusecs of water was released from Hathnoor dam on Sunday. Water level at Hathnoor is recorded at 212.15 metres, while danger level is 214 metres.

On Friday, 44,000 cusecs of water was released from Ukai. This was done to maintain the rule level in the dam as Hathnoor Dam in Maharastra less than two feet away from danger level. Strict vigil is maintained by Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) officials, as it is expected that more water is likely to be released in the coming days.

Dam officials opened six gates of the dam by two feet on Friday and started all four hydro power plants. While only 10,000 cusecs of water was released from Hathnoor dam, the step was taken as more inflow is expected in the coming days. Water level at Hathnoor dam is 212.43 metre, while its danger level is 214 metres. Areas falling under the catchment area of Tapi received showers on Sunday, which in turn will increase inflow in the dam.

Due to heavy rains in the upstream of Ukai, Central Water Commission (CWC) has decided to release water continuously for three days.

Entire district administration is on a high alert, due to continuous inflow of water. Concerned with the situation, district collector, AJ Shah held meetings with the municipal commissioner, S Aparna and discussed possible steps that will be required to be taken, if more amount of water is discharged from Ukai dam. The weir-cum-causeway was closed for vehicular traffic on Friday evening, after water began to overflow from it.
