There is some good news for Gujarat University students who are beginning their college education in the academic year 2011-12. They will be allowed to study for the next semester even if they fail to clear any of the subjects but will have to pass all their semester exams before 2015 to get their degree.

It should be noted that so far, in the yearly system, a student was allowed to keep term (ATKT) only if he failed in less than two subjects. If he failed in more than two subjects, he had to repeat a year.

But now the varsity has done away with the system from this year as they are launching the semester system.According to GU Vice Chancellor Parimal Trivedi, this policy will increase pass-out ratio and decrease the burden of failed students on colleges. Every year, more than one lakh students are declared failed by the university.

"But By 2015, these students have to clear all the subjects in which they have failed during the academic year. The degree certificate will be given only after they clear all the papers," said Trivedi.

GU is introducing Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) from 2011-12. The system will be applicable in all bachelor and master programmes offered by the university. In the CBCS system, students have to study more number of papers than the yearly system.

According to Trivedi, if the university doesn't allow the students to move forward, they will once again apply for the next academic year along with fresh pass out students increasing the burden on colleges.  GU will become the first university to introduce this system in Gujarat. An academic council meeting is scheduled for Saturday to take approval on this matter.
