The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) on Wednesday continued with its demolition drive in all the zones of the city, and razed illegal structures on CG Road, Bodakdev, Bapunagar, Nikol, Odhav and Ramol, among others. If the civic body is to be believed, there are as many as 20,000 illegal constructions in the city which have to be razed.

Super Plaza and Sunrise building in Bodakdev, and the Shilp building on CG Road were among the city’s well-known commercial complexes where encroachments were demolished. Angry with the demolition drive, the shop owners of CG road have called for a bandh in their area on Thursday.

The popular apparel outlet, Romano, in the cellar space of the Shilp complex was reclaimed by AMC officials, along with several other shops in the building. In Bodakdev, the popular eatery, Gwalia, had to suffer as it had built its kitchen on the building’s parking space.

On Wednesday, around 115 shops occupying 450 square metres of space were pulled down near India colony in Bapunagar.

Illegal structures were removed from around 210 square metres in East zone, around 600 square metres in New West Zone, and 60 square metres in Central zone. The situation turned tense on CG Road when AMC officials arrived to demolish encroachments in the cellar space of the Shilp complex. When the showroom of the shop, Romano, was demolished, the owners of other shops in the area gathered to protest the AMC drive. They alleged the AMC had been collecting property tax for structures which they are now calling ‘illegal’.

Honorary secretary of the CG Road shop owners association, Galubhai Kinger, said the AMC had not served them with prior notice about their so-called illegal constructions. The association has called for a bandh on CG Road on Thursday.

“All shops on CG Road will be closed on Thursday to protest against the AMC drive,” said Kinger. In Bapunagar, some shop owners had acquired a court order for maintenance of status quo till November 5.

“Demolitions will continue on Friday, though the 27 shops which have acquired the court order will be spared,” said deputy municipal commissioner for North Zone, SK Langa. AMC officials said they have started the demolition drive to implement the High Court order that has directed that all illegal constructions be removed on a priority. “The AMC will continue its drive to pull down illegal constructions,’ an AMC press release said.
