New Delhi: The Government has initiated action in over 200 cases of fraud against recruiting agents 2008 for "exploitation" of Indian workers going abroad in search of greener pastures.

Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi informed the Rajya Sabha that action has been initiated in 118 cases against registered recruiting agents and in 93 cases against unregistered and unauthorised agents for various offenses committed under the Emigration Act.

He said complaints of exploitation of Indian workers by recruiting agents, foreign employers and unscrupulous middlemen are received by his Ministry and Indian Missions abroad from time to time and based on these allegations, action has been initiated.

Replying to a question, the Minister informed the House that most of the complaints mainly pertain to cheating, overcharging, contractual violations by employers and delayed payment of salary.

Ravi said state governments and Union Territory administrations have been advised to instruct all police stations to keep a strict vigil on the activities of unscrupulous agents.
