At least 15 persons, including 13 children, suffered minor injuries when a fire broke out in an orphanage in Kupwara district, official sources said today.

The fire, which broke out yesterday, partially damaged the three-storeyed building of the orphanage, run by a non-governmental organisation at Brainwari, 100 km from here.

Sources said the incident happened due to gas leakage and 13 children who were staying there jumped from the first floor and suffered minor injuries.

The warden of the orphanage Mohammad Ashraf and his wife Nawshada suffered minor burn injuries and were rescued by the fire and emergency services which pressed five fire tenders into action.

"It took over three hours for the firemen to control the blaze," they said.
