It was payback time for the police as 20 police vans with 200 personnel entered the Asaram Ashram in Sabarmati and detained around 125 suspected goons. Asaram supporters had on Thursday attacked the police in Gandhinagar after a protest rally turned violent. Twenty policemen including the SP and DySP of Gandhinagar were injured in the incident.

Deputy superintendent of police, Sachivalay, Gandhinagar, KJ Rohit, who co-ordinated the operation, told mediapersons that the police have conducted a massive search at the ashram. He said some suspects from the Ashram have been detained.

“We have detained around 125 people from the Ashram and will interrogate them in connection with the attack on police officials in Gandhinagar,” Rohit said. The police searched almost all the rooms of the ashram and detained sadhaks who were trying to hide themselves in various rooms. “We even went to the Moksh Kutir of the Ashram, which is known to have an underground room. We found two sadhaks from the kutir,” said a police official.

However, the police officials did not visit the Asaram Gurukul for fear of scaring the children.“The caretakers at the hostel have not been bothered as it may frighten the kids there,” a police personnel said.Police officials of both Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar took part in the drive.

The police team had two DySPs, three police inspectors, five police sub inspectors and over a hundred SRP personnel. The police personnel had donned helmets and jackets as a precaution against counter attack by sadhaks. The massive operation was conducted from around 4 to 5 pm on Friday. The police officials also lathicharged some of the violent sadhaks.
