Failure to provide adequate faculty and infrastructure has landed 12 MBA colleges in trouble with the Gujarat Technological University asking them to pay up Rs94 lakh as penalty charges.

GTU had called authorities from 50 colleges for a review and a Local Inquiry Committee (LIC) report found 12 MBA colleges in the state flouting the norms on faculty-student ratio and infrastructure.

These colleges did not fulfill the norms decided by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). They were not equipped with facilities like laboratory, library, computers etc. One of the colleges penalised is in Ahmedabad, but GTU authorities were unwilling to divulge more information.

“At the review meeting, we examined if these colleges were following guidelines. Of the 50 colleges under LIC, 38 had started the procedure of recruiting additional faculty, but 12 colleges were lagging behind. So, we penalised them and set a deadline of July 31 to hire additional faculty as well as shore up infrastructure,” said GTU registrar Gitesh Joshi. He said if these colleges did not toe the line, they would lose the penalty money given to GTU.

Termed ‘deemed penalty’, the money would be returned to the colleges if the GTU, following an inspection, finds they have carried out the necessary changes.
