Officials of the Gujarat State Export Corporation Limited (GSEC), which manages the air cargo complex at the international airport, confirmed the incident.
In an unprecedented turn of events at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, a packet of 10 kg gold worth Rs2 crore to Rs2.5 crore was found missing from the air cargo complex on Tuesday.
There were 20 packets — all similar — but one of them went missing. The incident is said to be the first of its kind at the air cargo complex, a highly secure zone.
Officials of the Gujarat State Export Corporation Limited (GSEC), which manages the air cargo complex at the international airport, confirmed the incident. GSEC general manager Sandip Chavda said that about 10kg gold had been stolen from the air cargo complex. Chavda lodged a theft complaint with Meghaninagar police on Tuesday.
He said that on the midnight of May 7 a shipment containing 20 packets of gold had arrived by Singapore Airlines. The consignment was meant for MMTC, India’s largest gold importer.
Chavda said that the consignment had been cleared by the Customs and was awaiting delivery when on Tuesday officials found one of the packets missing.
According to Meghaninagar police, the management of air cargo is equally responsible. Police said that the CCTV cameras installed in the strong room, where gold and other precious jewellery are kept, don’t work.
“We have seen the recording of CCTV cameras but got nothing out of it. They don’t work properly because they have been installed from a very odd angle where no movements get captured. Even the print result is also not visible,” said sub inspector PM Parmar who is investigating the case.
However, airport sources said that the missing gold packet might have been delivered at the wrong address by mistake. They said that gold shipments are kept in the locker or strong room.
