Chief minister Narendra Modi’s fast may turn out to be more an exercise at changing his anti-minority image than at fostering social harmony.

Don’t be surprised if your see a large number of Muslims on the podium on which Modi is to begin his three-day fast from Saturday.

The Saffron Party has made sure that thousands of Muslims attend the event with prominent visibility. This will buttress the Modi government’s claim that the chief minister and the BJP have acceptance among Muslims in the state, and add to the success of the fast. If the claim of the party’s minority cell is any thing to go by, more than 10.000 Muslims will visit the University Convention Centre during the event.

Sources said the party had directed its senior leaders of the minority community in all corners of the state to send the maximum number of people of their community to attend Modi’s fast.

The BJP has divided the whole state into five zones - east, west, south, north and central Gujarat - and it has planned that minority community members from different zones will visit the venue on each of the three days of the fast.  Bollywood music director, Ismail Darbar, would attend the fast on Monday and has plans of meeting the chief minister personally.

Muslim scholars, religious leaders, and professionals such as doctors, professors, engineers and lawyers are also expected to come for the event.  "Between 2,000 and 2,500 Muslims from each of the five zones of the state will come to meet the chief minister during the event," said Kadar Salot, convenor of the BJP minority cell.

"They will come voluntarily and bear all the expenses of their visit. Aalims, Maulanas, presidents of the various Jamatas within the Muslim community apart from scholars and educated people will be among the delegates coming to meet the chief minister," said Salot.

The party has fixed the responsibility of South Gujarat region on Sufi saint Mehboob Ali Shah; president of state BJP minority cell, Salot, been given the responsibility of Saurashtra and Kutch; and another Muslim leader, Imtiyaz Pathan, will look after the North Gujarat region.

Former IPS offcier AI Saiyad, who contested the Ahmedabad civic polls from Sarkhej ward, has been given the responsibility of Ahmedabad and the areas in its vicinity.

"All Muslims are coming voluntarily to extend support to Modi. Even our religious leaders and priests are coming to meet the chief minister. A total of 265 people, who are leaders of their respective Jamats, will come besides 250 religious leaders including Aalims and Maulanas," Salot said.

After the Godhra riots of 2002, Modi was condemned, nationally and internationally, for not protecting the lives of Muslims. The party had recently held a gathering of 200 Muslim councillors of municipalities and local self-government bodies in the state.
