Work at the Maruti Suzuki factory at Manesar has come to a grinding halt after violence broke out on Wednesday evening in the facility which left one dead and 94 injured.

The production has come to a grinding halt and will remain so for an indefinite period, according to company sources.

The plant, which produces cars such as the Swift, SX4, A Star, Swift Dzire and Alto has been witnessing labour strife for months.

Last year a similar agitation had shut down the plant when workers went on a strike. However, it was alleged that some of the union leaders had been paid off leading to the end of the strike.

An official release from the company said it would, “shortly announce our decision on the next steps with regard to resuming operations in these facilities.”

The workers lived in surrounding villages like Nakrola, Khor, Vilaspur, Alihar, Dhana fled as the police raided these villages on Wednesday night. As a result resuming operations here in the short-term period will be a difficult proposition. The facility was producing around 1,700 cars every day.

Police said the trigger for the violence was an altercation between a suspended worker and a supervisor. This took an ugly turn when the GM (HR) at Manesar, Awanish Kumar Dev was killed.

Nearly 85 Maruti Suzuki employees and nine police officers were also injured as the clashes spread.

So far the police have made 100 arrests and named 55 people in the FIR. A SIT team has been formed which will be headed by ACP Ranbir Tomar to look into the incident.

It is believed that the reason for the agitation and the violence was the management’s decision to turn down a pending proposal of the workers to increase wages. The increment was due in March for both the permanent and the non-permanent employees. The MSI workers, it seems, had gone around threatening some ‘extreme action’ if wage revision did not take place.

Gautam Mody, secretary of New Trade Union Initiative in a statement said, “The present dispute is a well-planned instigation by the management to systematically derail the on-going negotiations on the charter of demands submitted by the Maruti Suzuki Workers Union in April 2012 and to discredit the sustained and united struggle of the workers at the Manesar plant.”
